Energy major Eni has announced two substantial new gas discoveries offshore Libya, resulting from a recently initiated exploration campaign. Preliminary estimates indicate the combined structures contain more than 1 Trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas in place.
Here are the key details of the discovery:
Location: The finds were made in two adjacent geological structures, Bahr Essalam South 2 (BESS 2) and Bahr Essalam South 3 (BESS 3). The wells are located roughly 85 km off the coast in approximately 650 feet of water.
Geology: Gas-bearing intervals were encountered within the Metlaoui Formation. Data indicates a high-quality reservoir with productive capacity confirmed by testing.
Development Plan: Because the new structures are located just 16 km south of the existing Bahr Essalam field (Libya's largest offshore field), Eni plans to fast-track development by tying them back to existing offshore facilities.
Market: The gas produced from these new discoveries is slated for the Libyan domestic market and for export to Italy.
Eni remains the leading international operator in Libya, where it has been present since 1959. In 2025, the company had an equity production of approximately 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
